Honey, we need a heat pump...
"The guy next door has got one dear, we need one too!"
If this is you, it's time to call Rory at New Zealand Heat Pumps. Based in Auckland, they're the specialists in providing unbiased advice about heat pumps and ventilation systems best suited to your lifestyle and budget.
Your heat pump - leave it on or turn it off?
I'm often asked, which is better: to leave the heat pump on all the time, or turn it off if you leave the house?
Some people I know have their heat pump on all the time, sure that if they turn it off and the room gets cold the power that will be required to get the room back up to temperature will be enormous!
An interesting question, and with a rather long answer...
Keep your heat pump filters clean
Here's a hot tip for an extended Summer: If you already have a heat pump / air conditioner, remove and rinse the filter (usually found behind the inlet grill) every few months. It helps clean the air you breathe and needs to be cleaned to prevent the buildup of dust and mould. Proper airflow through the coil is also critical to the function of the unit. Cleaning it regularly will help your heat pump operate more efficiently.

Our ducted heat pumps perform amongst the best
This is a simple white ceiling diffuser right? Wrong. This swirl diffuser is primarily used in our ducted heat pumps and outperforms many of the others which we have tried over the last few years.
It looks good installed into a ceiling, and comes in three sizes:
- 200mm
- 250mm
- 300mm
and four colour finishes:
- white
- black
- satin chrome
- satin silver
It's swirl design manipulates the incoming air into a vortex allowing it to mix with the existing air quickly, effortlessly and with minimal draft. It’s not only great for house ducted systems, but for commercial ducted systems as well.
New Fujitsu E3 installation for master bedroom
Here is a heat pump installation showing the new release from Fujitsu, a 2.5KW cooling, 3.2KW heating heat pump from the E3 range.
It has been installed high above the wardrobe in this case because this way we can get a fall on the condensate drain, and is a couple of meters away from the bed.
The range has some great features including the most energy efficiency of any brand in New Zealand. And another thing I like about it is that it blends in to the room very well, especially if you have light coloured walls like this house does. This was installed in the bedroom on the second level of the house, and in this heat wave I'm sure it will ease those hot summery nights.
Is a bigger heat pump a better option?
Supersizing your air conditioning system
When it comes to Heat Pumps, bigger is not always better.
If air conditioners and air conditioning systems are too big, they can cost more to purchase in the first place, they will use more electricity, increase humidity, and turn on and off more frequently - which wears them out faster.
Extremely energy efficient Fujitsu heat pump arrives in NZ
The E3 heat pump from Fujitsu is a new model which is extremely efficient, and uses new R32 refrigerant.
With domestic air conditioners/ heat pumps coming into the NZ market, there is progression into new and more efficient refrigerants, 20 to 25 years ago it was the R22, about 10 years ago a more efficient isotropic blend in the form of R410A was introduced. And today the new E3 uses a new type of refrigreant, R32. The first company to bring these new type of units (R32) into NZ is Fujitsu.
The 6 kw highwall has a COP of 4.23 and the 3.2 kw highwall has a COP of 4.92. These are far more efficient than any thing else on the market. (COP stands for coefficient of performance, basicaly the more the COP the more heat output you get for every dollar of energy spent).

Rory runs "the colour run"
New Zealand Heat Pump's Auckland manager Rory participated in the 5km fun run on Sunday at Pukekohe called “the colour run”. A great day was had by all and the weather was all fine for the run. The event was attended by about 30,000 entrants. At 1km intervals, dye throwers pummel everyone with a different colour dye, but no one seemed too bothered, some were even getting down on the ground and rolling in it!
New Fujitsu floor-mounted aircon unit for conservatory space
Here is a picture of a new Fujitsu floor-mounted unit, which replaced the old Mitsubishi floor-mounted unit which did not run. We ripped it out and installed a new Fujitsu ABTF18L 6KW floor mounted unit, great for the conservatory, which gets very hot in summer, and very cold in winter. The unit fits just nicely into where the old one was, and the pipes run under the floor. The new unit, is quieter, better looking, and much more efficient.
It has a 6 year warranty as well!
